GUNT Equipment Features in Engineering Education Research Presented at SEFI 2026
GUNT functional models have featured in engineering education research presented at the SEFI 2026 Conference in Prague, demonstrating how practical training equipment can help students develop a deeper understanding of engineering design and manufacturing processes.
The research, presented by Professor Darson Li from UNSW Sydney, explored integrated curriculum design and its role in foundational design and manufacturing education. The paper, titled “Integrated Curriculum Design – Effect on First Year Design and Manufacturing Education”, also involved Henry Heckmann from GUNT.
The study provides an interesting example of how hands-on activities can be incorporated into engineering education, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge while developing practical skills.

Bringing Engineering Design into Practice
An important aspect of the research was the use of GUNT functional models, including the lever shear, lever press and bending press, to support practical learning.
These teaching models allow students to explore manufacturing processes first-hand, helping them understand how engineering principles are applied to the production of physical components.
One of the practical exercises involves producing a fastening clamp, taking students through different stages of the manufacturing process. Alongside working with the equipment, students can apply technical drawing and measurement skills while developing their understanding of metal fabrication and component assembly.
By incorporating these activities into the curriculum, engineering concepts become more tangible, giving students valuable experience of the relationship between design, manufacturing and the finished product.
Supporting the Development of Practical Engineering Skills
The research presented at SEFI 2026 reinforces the importance of practical experience within engineering education.
For universities, colleges and technical training institutions, integrating functional equipment into teaching can help students build confidence in applying their knowledge, interpreting engineering drawings and understanding manufacturing operations.
It also demonstrates how relatively straightforward mechanical systems can be used to teach a wide range of engineering principles, providing opportunities for students to develop skills that are relevant to their future careers.

GUNT Technology: Supporting Engineering Education in the UK and Ireland
At GUNT Technology, we work with universities, colleges and technical training providers throughout the UK and Ireland, supplying equipment designed specifically for engineering education.
With an extensive range of training systems covering mechanical engineering, mechatronics, fluid mechanics, thermal engineering and many other disciplines, our focus is on helping educators provide meaningful practical learning experiences.
The inclusion of GUNT equipment in this research is another example of its application within higher education, demonstrating how purpose-designed teaching models can support both curriculum development and practical engineering training.
